Maple Hill Farm’s Mission
Our mission is to raise the very best grass-fed beef in a humane fashion for local consumption in the most natural, healthy way possible.
Maple Hill Farm is a farm raising grass-fed, hormone-free and chemical-free beef for our local communities in central and western Massachusetts. Our animals forage on pasture which is their native diet, fostering their growth (at a natural pace) and health. Raising grass-fed animals has an array of benefits for consumers, the environment, the farmers, and the animals themselves.
Maple Hill Farm takes pride in its stewardship of almost 300 acres of land. Ninety percent of this land is in permanent conservation trusts, most of it with the Trustees of Reservations and some with the Hardwick Land Trust. This means that the land will forever be protected from development.
A major benefit of raising animals on pasture is that the meat is far healthier than that of animals crowded into feedlots and fed grain to fatten them quickly.
For example, compared with feedlot meat, meat from grass-fed beef has less total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories. It also has more vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin C, and a number of unsaturated, health-promoting fats.
When properly managed, raising animals on pasture instead of on factory farms is a net benefit to the environment. A diet of grazed grass requires much less fossil fuel than a feedlot diet of dried corn and soy. On pasture, grazing animals do their own fertilizing and harvesting. They harvest solar energy and maintain topsoil and moisture.
